What is Cinco de Mayo?
By-Tay
Hey everyone! Today is Cinco de Mayo! Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “5th of May) is an important day when the Mexican Army beat the French Empire at The Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. This event was a huge victory for those of Mexican descent. On this day, people celebrate in the state of Puebla with parades, speeches, and reenactments. In the Mid-20th century, this was a way for Mexican-Americans to show pride. Some people think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day, but Independence Day is actually September 16th.
