How to Make Delicious Monkey Bread!

By Imagene

Hi this is Imagene! If you are a long-time fan of CLN, then you probably know that I love cooking and writing recipes on CLN. So I decided to post a recipe for one of my new favorite desserts- monkey bread!! It’s called monkey bread because you eat it with your hands like a monkey.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup packed brown sugar

  • 1½ tsp ground cinnamon

  • ⅛ tsp ground nutmeg

  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted and cooled

  • Vegetable oil spray

  • 1 pound pizza dough, room temperature (when I made the monkey bread for the first time, I forgot to have it at room temperature, so I had to wait for a long time).

  • ⅓ cup confectioners’ sugar (also known as powdered sugar)

  • 2 tsp milk

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, stir together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spray an 8-inch round cake pan with vegetable oil spray (when I made it, I used a 9-inch pan. Use an 8-inch pan).

  2. Spray a counter lightly with vegetable oil spray (but I just used a plastic mat since I didn’t want to get the counter dirty). Place the dough on the greased surface and pat into a square approximately 6 inches by 6 inches. Use kitchen shears to cut the dough into 36 pieces (and yes I know that seems like a lot, but if you cut in half, cut the halves into thirds, cut those in half, and cut those in thirds, then you get thirty six).

  3. Roll each piece of dough into a ball. Dip each ball into the melted butter to coat it, roll it in brown sugar mixture, then place the dough balls into the greased pan. Cover the bottom of the pan with dough balls in a single layer.

  4. Cover the pan tightly with plastic wrap, and leave in a warm place until dough balls are puffy and have risen about ½ an inch, about 1-2 hours.

  5. Adjust oven rack to the middle position and heat the oven to 350 degrees (fahrenheit definitely not celsius, if you set the oven to 350 degrees celsius, then you would end up with very burnt monkey bread.) Discard the plastic. Place the pan in the oven and bake until the top of the monkey bread is light golden brown, 20-25 minutes.

  6. Remove monkey bread from the oven. You might want to get an adult to help. Place the pan on the cooling rack and let monkey bread cool for 5 minutes (no longer).

  7. Place a large plate on top of the pan. Ask an adult (or just do it yourself) to carefully flip the monkey bread onto the plate. Remove the pan. Let it cool for 10 minutes before glazing it with…

  8. This! In a third small bowl, stir the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Use a spoon to drizzle the glaze over the monkey bread. Serve warm and enjoy this delicious treat!
