5 Common Dreams and What They Mean

By Lela S. <3</3 (idk?)

Every night, when you go to sleep, whether you remember it or not, you dream. Recently, I’ve been having less nightmares, which is pretty ironic when you think about the situation I’m in right now, and also pretty understandable, if you know who my favorite YouTuber is.

I’m not going to go into detail, but dreams vary in magnitude and meaning for everyone. I’m not even sure what my own dreams mean yet, but one thing’s for sure, it’s disappointing to wake up! Because of this, I’ve decided to make an article about eight of the most common dreams and their interpretations.

1. Dreams about falling

Dreams about falling are very common. Personally, I remember at least three or four of the dreams I have every night (yes, you dream multiple dreams in one night!), and falling happens at least once. According to multiple dream interpretations and studies, dreaming about falling means that something is NOT going well in your life. This means that something needs to be changed: you might need to rethink a choice, consider a new direction, or simply move on. It’s a symbol of fear: more specifically, fear of failure, whether it be in school, in a video game, or in something else entirely. You’ve got to let go and let yourself enjoy life more.

2. Dreams about being chased

Another really common dream, dreams that feature being pursued by an attacker can be terrifying. I’ve also had these types of dreams frequently, and my attacker is always the same person. This kind of dream signifies that you are trying to escape from your own fears or desires. The key to understanding what this means is the identity of the pursuer. Being chased by an animal means that you are hiding from your own anger, passions, and other feelings. If the attacker is a mysterious, unknown figure, this might represent past trauma. Finally, if you are being chased by someone of the opposite gender, you’re haunted by a past relationship.

3. Dreams about dying

Death is another common subject of dreams. I’ve dreamed of this too. Dreamers sometimes dream about the death of a loved one, or even dream about themselves dying. The meaning of this dream is that you are afraid of change. Like death, change can be scary because - also like death - we do not know what is on the other side of the change.

4. Dreams about taking a test

Honestly, I find this one super funny, probably because I find most tests at my school only moderately challenging, and a dream about taking a test wouldn’t necessarily be a nightmare for me. This isn’t something I’ve dreamed of before, although it has a similar, intuitive meaning to the dream of falling: being afraid of failure. To dream of failing an exam, being late for one, or being unprepared shows that you feel unprepared for something in your life.

5. Dreams about flying

AHA. This dream, out of all five dreams here, is the dream I’ve dreamed the most. And yes, I’ve dreamed of this even before I was rid of nightmares. They can be exciting and even liberating, but there are two different sides to this dream: on the one hand, a dream about flying can represent feelings of freedom and independence. On the other hand, they can also indicate a desire to flee and escape the realities of life.
